{"id":4502,"date":"2018-11-20T16:55:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T16:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simplylaw.waydevelopers.com\/england-wales\/wiki\/prohibited-steps-order-solicitors\/"},"modified":"2024-04-15T02:55:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T02:55:35","slug":"prohibited-steps-order-solicitors","status":"publish","type":"guides","link":"https:\/\/simply.law\/england-wales\/guides\/family-law-solicitor\/child-arrangement-order\/prohibited-steps-order-solicitors\/","title":{"rendered":"Prohibited steps orders in English and Welsh family law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prohibited steps orders are made by courts in family law cases in order to prevent a particular parent from carrying out specified actions such as changing a child&#8217;s surname, not give the child inappropriate medical treatment, \u00a0move the child to another geographical area or change schools; \u00a0or\u00a0from taking the child outside of the United Kingdom even for one night.<\/p>\n<p>Prohibited steps orders are particularly relevant to cases where there is a reasonable belief that one parent may take the child to another location, whether abroad or within the United Kingdom against the wishes of the other parent, or with a view to permanently relocate in a bid to maliciously prevent contact between the child and parent.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to comply with a prohibited steps order is contempt of court\u00a0and in some cases may result in the imposition of a custodial sentence.<\/p>\n<h2>Altering the terms of a prohibited steps order<\/h2>\n<p>Once a prohibited steps order is in place, its terms are enforceable under the law. However, if the situation changes, the parties within the family can negotiate an agreement to amend\u00a0the terms of the order.
